Fort Scott, October 1st, 1862
Dear wife:
I take this time to write you a few hasty lines. My health at this time is none of the best. I am troubled with the rheumatism. We got our pay day before yesterday and yesterday I sent you $15 by express. I also send you enclosed $5 in this letter. It is considered unsafe to send money either way. It is also unsafe to keep it, as the Rebels would take it from us if we were taken prisoner. Yesterday I saw Mr. Burlingame, Wake, Mumford, Bragg, and Rosencrats. They are all well. We have orders to march today at 4 o'clock p.m. Our destination is Arkansas. How far from here I do not know, but direct your letters to C. N. Mumford, Fort Scott, Kans. General Blunt's Body Guard and the letters will follow if they can come. I should not have sent this letter today if we had not been going away as I suppose the express money will go with the mail and if one is lost I fear both may be but I hope for the best. I have not time to write. I got a letter from Manley by Mr. Bragg. You tell him it is impossible for me to answer it at this time. I suppose there is some work for us to do at this time. A good-bye to you and all for the present. Write as soon as you get this. God bless you all.
